Our story

1951

A Bold Beginning

On a scorching summer day in Oklahoma City, Marie Welch founded OGA at her kitchen table, determined to solve a gap in the market. At the time, rural insurance agents were often overlooked by big carriers and had limited products to offer. Marie saw an opportunity to support these independent agents — and she took it. What began in a small building next to the now-famous Kaiser Ice Cream shop quickly grew into a company fueled by purpose, grit, and a pioneering spirit.

1970

Innovation in Motion

As the agency expanded, OGA moved to larger offices at 36th and Shartel. Marie continued breaking ground — this time by embracing technology ahead of its time. She adopted the IBM System 36 mainframe computer to streamline operations and speed up paperwork. Insurance executives from across the country traveled to Oklahoma City just to see how this small agency had achieved such efficiency. Staying true to her generous nature, Marie shared her proprietary software freely with anyone who asked.

1983

Breaking barriers

Marie Welch’s leadership and innovation didn’t go unnoticed. In 1983, she became the only woman ever elected president of the American Association of Managing General Agents (AAMGA), gaining national recognition. That same year, she became the first and only woman to present on the U.S. general agency system before the prestigious Lloyd’s of London — a true milestone in industry history and a proud moment for OGA.

1951

A new Chapter Begins

As Oklahoma navigated the economic turbulence of the 1980s, OGA held steady. In 1988, leadership passed to one of the agency’s rising stars — Baron Garcia. With deep respect for the company’s legacy, Baron continued to operate OGA as a family business, maintaining its strong foundation while adding a bold marketing and acquisition strategy. Under his direction, the company grew to over $25 million in sales, welcoming new carrier partnerships and expanding its reach across the state.

Now in its second half-century of operation, OGA remains proudly family-led and firmly rooted in its original mission: to support agents through service, innovation, and relationships that last. With more than 70 years of experience, the company continues to adapt and grow — honoring the past while embracing the future.
